How do we define sustainability?
The United Nations Definition
In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as
“meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
We believe this stands true today and we continue to use this as our North Star.
How HOAP Works
We developed a BS filter for greenwashing products or brands trying to claim they're sustainable by making a token few items out of organic material - being Organic is our entry point, not a plus point. And that's just the start.
Just getting on HOAP, regardless of the score, means the product has benefits to the world beyond it's function but we don't stop there.
We continue to monitor, holding Brands accountable, and ourselves. Every product we sell on HOAP is protected by our Greenwash Guarantee.

The Foundation of HOAP
STAGE 1
WE EVALUATE
Every product is evaluated against the HOAP Sustainability Index: P.E.T.A.L.S. She is the gatekeeper to HOAP.
We built it, we own it and there's nothing that anyone can do to bypass it - It's like trying to duck-dive Mavericks on a 9ft foamie.
We're not expecting perfect index scores, there's no such thing but there is a minimum to get through. Every brand must score in every category - you can only get a point by being sustainable, how sustainable is how much you score.
The Gatekeeper to HOAP
STAGE 2
WE INSPECT
Just claiming is not enough!
Brands must supply evidence of the steps they have taken across their supply chain to ensure sustainability, any claims they make they must substantiate. Once we have that, we go to work independently, covertly to ensure all claims are legit; leveraging independent local industry professionals (therefore we don't need to increase our carbon footprint - our scouts are preapproved and vetted from within our network)
Once approved, brands must agree to our code of conduct enforcing integrity and honesty at all points before their products go live.
This is our last barrier.
stage 3
WE COLLABORATE
Once live, we want to support and add value to the brands and therefore our community.
Any violation is openly feed that back and we give the brands appropriate time to resolve that issue.
Any serial offending brand will be removed from HOAP.
We're accountable too. Profits made on any violating products made by HOAP will be returned via our Greenwash Guarantee automatically.
Stage 4
WE MONITOR
Once we have evaluated the product, we continue to spot check elements of the supply chain to ensure brands are maintaining these standards. Any changes will be reflected in the HOAP scores on page, any product now failing will be removed.
STEP 5
WE DETER
We appreciate mistakes happen but all products from an offending brand will be removed until the issue is resolved.
All brands are treated with integrity until they violate our Code of Conduct.
We will use all our means to protect our planet and expose intentional violators of our Code of Conduct.
